Whole House Renovation by Liston Design Build Completely Transforms Maryland Heights Home and Earns National Award.
Our clients came to us for help converting their compartmentalized 1996 home into a 21st century open-space oasis. They wanted an open floor plan with modern accents that would evoke a sense of harmony and flow throughout the home while still maintaining distinct gathering spaces. This whole house renovation – including the kitchen, bathrooms, multiple living areas, and staircase – thrilled our clients and garnered a prestigious national award for remodeling excellence, the Chrysalis Award.
Before the renovation, the overbearing, blocky interior architectural accents and beige color palette gave this home a very dated look. Limited sight lines and lack of open flow between rooms resulted in dark corners and isolated living areas.

To modernize and update the interior of this home, we implemented open space concepts throughout the house, establishing full sight lines and a seamless flow from one area into another. We also updated the color palette, added modern architectural accents, and built spaces to display the treasures our clients had collected during their travels—the perfect way to add meaningful and beautiful texture to each area. The result is a modern, open, and inviting home.
After: The upper level of the home now shines with an open layout. The hearth room, kitchen island, and additional furniture groupings provide distinct and inviting gathering spaces, while simultaneously supporting a harmonious flow throughout the entire upper level.
After: The hearth room juxtaposes modern lines, pops of color, and layered textures. The updated fireplace boasts new stone facing and a floating hearth with custom underlighting.
After: The kitchen is now open, stylish, and filled with light. The kitchen island acts as an attractive and functional focal point, offering seating, storage, and additional counter space for both food prep and dining.
After: The stained wood handrails and clunky white balusters of the previous staircase were replaced with a dark wood and elegant balusters, creating a dramatic and cohesive architectural feature to connect the upper and lower levels.
After: The dark cabinetry, leather furniture, and sleek lines of the completely updated lower level bar give it an appropriately modern and sophisticated air.
After: The use of glass and tilework in the lower-level bath create a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere.
After: The Master Bath is now an inviting oasis with striking modern accents. The glass tile wall frames the picture window and highlights the freestanding bathtub, beckoning occupants to enjoy a relaxing soak. Similar modern accents are incorporated in the shower tile, while the dark cabinetry and light countertops echo the color scheme.
After: A lower-level exercise room was converted into a custom wine bar. The dark cabinetry, modern accents, stone wall, and custom lighting combine to create a unique and chic wine showcase.
This updated and modern home is now perfect for both entertaining and relaxing, and our clients are thrilled with the results.
